FLY OLD GLORY HIGH ON AN AMERICAN-MADE 40' FLAGPOLE

Whether you’re shopping for a school, church, office building, municipal property, or anything in between, a 40-foot flag pole is the perfect size for most commercial settings. It’s the goldilocks zone - big enough to make a statement, not too large it looks out of place.

This commercial flag pole size looks best with an 8' x 12' flag, giving plenty of presence across parking lots and open spaces while still fitting the average commercial foundation. Here are some of the most popular styles available in our 40 ft flag pole collection:

  • External halyard flagpole: Traditional rope-and-cleat setup with a revolving truck at the top. Easy to install and maintain.

  • Internal halyard flagpole: Stainless steel halyard systems operated by an internal winch. Best for high-traffic areas where you want a cleaner profile (and tamper-resistance).

  • Hurricane-rated flagpoles: Built with thicker wall construction (up to .250”) and heavier weights for coastal conditions and wind exposure up to 231mph (unflagged).

  • Nautical flagpoles: Horizontal yardarm added near the top for flying multiple flags without crowding a single halyard line.

You can select from a multitude of finishes to match your property, too - satin aluminum, anodized clear, anodized bronze, and anodized black are all available. This combination of variety, quality, and service is why we’re the #1 choice for a 40-foot flag pole.

THE HD FLAGPOLES DIFFERENCE

HD Flagpoles is proud to supply American-made flag poles to businesses and homeowners alike. Our 40 ft flag pole collection features tapered aluminum shafts with clearly stated butt diameters, top diameters, wall thicknesses, and wind ratings, so you can compare structural differences before ordering.

Most models include a complete installation kit - ground sleeve, base collar, revolving truck, swivel snaps, and a properly sized 8′×12′ U.S. flag. This takes all the stress out of sourcing and installing a 40-foot flag pole on your property.

You’ll gain access to multiple construction levels at the same height, from standard commercial poles to hurricane-rated options with thicker walls and heavier weights. Our customer service team can help you determine what you actually need, too. Get in touch today!

WHAT SIZE FLAG FOR A 40 FT FLAGPOLE?

We’ve found that an 8’ x 12’ flag is the best fit for a 40-foot pole. It keeps the proper proportion with the pole’s height and diameter.

HOW MUCH DOES A 40 FT FLAGPOLE COST?

That depends on construction types, as our standard external halyard models cost less than internal halyard or hurricane-rated poles built with thicker walls and heavier materials. Pricing ranges from just over $4,000 to roughly $6,800 in our 40 ft flag pole collection.

HOW DEEP SHOULD A 40 FT FLAGPOLE BE MOUNTED IN GROUND?

We recommend a ground sleeve set in a concrete foundation sized according to engineering specs, soil conditions, and local wind exposure. Typically 10% of the flagpole is burried in the ground.

WHATS A COMMON HEIGHT FOR A RESIDENTIAL FLAGPOLE?

Most residential flagpoles are 20-25 feet tall. Some larger properties will install a flagpole as tall as 30 feet or higher, though. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer and some etates have 100' flagpoles!

IS IT ILLEGAL TO FLY A FLAG AT NIGHT WITHOUT A LIGHT?

The U.S. Flag Code recommends illumination after dark, but it’s not a criminal offense to display the flag without lighting. It’s just not very tasteful.

SHOULD THE AMERICAN FLAG BE LEFT OUT IN THE WEATHER?

All-weather flags can handle normal rain, but strong winds or severe storms can cause damage, so lowering the flag is usually the safer choice - even with our hurricane-rated flagpoles. It's also written in the US Flag code, American flags should be brought in for safe-keeping during bad weather.

HOW MANY FLAGS CAN YOU FLY ON A 40 FT FLAGPOLE?

One is great, two is fine - any more than that and you start to crowd and/or weaken the flagpole. Each flagpole is engineered to handle a maximum of two flags. It depends on how tall the pole is, of course. What matters most is the U.S. flag is always at the highest position on the halyard.
