KEY COMPONENTS OF AN EXTERNAL HALYARD FLAGPOLE

These flagpoles use an outside rope-and-pulley system to raise and lower the flag. The “halyard” is the rope. It runs along the outside of the shaft, through a truck (pulley assembly) at the top, and ties off at a cleat near the base.

  • Revolving Truck: The pulley at the top of the pole. Ours rotate a full 360 degrees to keep the flag from wrapping around the shaft.

  • Halyard (Rope): High-strength nylon rope built for outdoor exposure and UV resistance.

  • Tie-Off Cleat: A 9-inch cleat mounted near the base where you secure the halyard after raising the flag.

  • Swivel Snaps: Two snap hooks connecting the flag to the halyard. They pivot freely so the flag hangs correctly in any wind direction.

  • Ground Sleeve: The foundation tube set in concrete that the pole slides into. Included with every order.

  • Base Collar: A finished trim piece covering the gap between the pole and the ground sleeve.

The external halyard flagpole design has worked for decades because it’s simple and more affordable than its internal halyard counterpart. When something does need servicing, you can usually handle it without calling a specialist.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXTERNAL AND INTERAL HALYARD?

External halyard poles route the rope along the outside of the shaft. You raise and lower the flag by hand. An internal halyard flagpole hides the rope inside and uses a winch mechanism instead. Internal systems are tamper-resistant and look cleaner, but cost more. External halyard is the standard choice for most installations. Way easier to service.

WHY DO OUR FLAGPOLES USE ROTATING TRUCKS?

A stationary truck forces the flag to face one direction. That means the flag wraps around the pole when the wind shifts. This can damage the fabric and it just looks rough from the ground. Our revolving truck system spins freely with the wind, keeping the flag extended and visible from every angle. Less wrapping and fabric wear. The flag actually looks the way it should.

WHY IS THERE A GOLD BALL ON TOP OF FLAGPOLES?

It's called a finial and originally capped wooden flagpoles to keep out rain and rot. Today it's really just there for tradition. We include an anodized gold aluminum finial with every pole.

WHAT IS THE TALLEST FLAGPOLE I CAN PUT IN MY YARD?

Most residential areas allow 20 to 25 feet without a permit, but local codes and HOA rules come into play, so double-check yours first. We carry everything from a 15 ft flag pole to a massive 80 ft flag pole, so rest assured we’ve got whatever height your property allows.

HOW DO FLAGPOLES WITH ROTATING TRUCKS COMPARE TO OTHER OPTIONS?

Fixed-truck poles lock the flag into one wind direction and the flag can wrap fast when the wind shifts. A rotating truck spins with the wind so the flag stays extended with less fabric wear. Every external halyard flagpole we sell comes with a revolving truck system standard.

HOW DEEP SHOULD I INSTALL MY FLAGPOLE

General rule: 10% of the pole height plus 2 feet. So a 20-foot pole needs around 4 feet of depth, and a 40-footer needs about 6. The ground sleeve we include is sized to your pole. Just set it in concrete per the installation guide that ships with your order.
