But if you bought your flagpole elsewhere and they didn’t give you a flag to match, then you’ve got some stuff to figure out. You don’t want to go too small and have the flag look dwarfed from a distance. Too big and you’re putting unnecessary stress on the pole, burning through flags faster, and throwing off the whole look.

What Flag Size For Pole is Best For TWO Flags?

It’s easy to figure out the ideal flag size for pole if you only plan on flying a single flag. But a lot of our customers want to fly two flags, one stacked on top of the other. This changes things. 

First, know that the US flag should be on top - per the U.S. flag code. It needs to be the standard flag pole size for your pole height. Easy enough. The second flag should be one size smaller.

Let’s look at a 25 ft flag pole as an example. You’d fly a 4'x6' American flag on top and a 3'x5' state or military flag beneath it.

A flag size comparison between single-flag and dual-flag setups shows why this matters: you’re dealing with more wind load, more halyard ear, and a higher risk of tangling. A smaller second flag gives both flags room to fly freely. 

The alternative for those who want to fly two flags of the same size is to go up a pole size but keep flags sized lower. For instance, a 30 ft flag pole could better handle to 4x6 flags. 

Things to Think About With Flag Sizing

There are a few nuances you should keep in mind with proper flag sizing. These include:

• Wind exposure: You might want to size your flag down a bit if the pole sits in an open area with consistent wind. A smaller flag catches less wind and holds up longer. We always give this advice for flagpoles on coastal and hilltop properties.
• Flag material: Lightweight nylon flies in a breeze, and can be sized normally. Polyester is tougher but needs stronger wind to fully unfurl. Go one step smaller for windy areas. 
• Residential vs commercial: A 3'x5' or 4'x6' flag is the norm on a 20-25 foot pole for a residential flagpole. The optimal flag size for pole scales with the building and property for a commercial flag pole. A 40-foot pole in front of a strip mall takes a 6'x10' or 8'x12'. Think about a flag size comparison against the surrounding architecture.
• HOA restrictions: Some HOAs limit pole height and flag dimensions, so do your due diligence before you buy. Getting the perfect flag pole flag size ratio doesn't help if the HOA forces you take it down.

Not at all! It’s actually the most common size we see in residential settings. On a 15-20 foot pole, it falls right within the ¼-⅓ ratio we recommend for most of our customers. It might be on the smaller end of the spectrum on a 20-foot pole, though, which is why we typically pair a 4x6 flag with those poles. 

What size flag pole for 5x8 flag?

25-30 feet tall is perfect for a 5x8 flag. This is where you start crossing from typical residential sizing into larger residential or small commercial. 

Can you put a 5x8 flag on a 20 ft pole?

Technically yes, but we think it might look a little oversized. A quick flag size comparison makes it clear - the 8-foot fly is 40% of the pole’s height, a bit past the ⅓ guideline for our taste. 

What size flag pole for 6x10 flag?

30-40 feet tall. A 6x10 flag is honestly huge, so you’ll only see it on expansive commercial properties. The jump from 5'x8' to a 6'x10' is pretty dramatic both in terms of looks and wind load, so you’ll need a bigger, beefier flagpole.
