Flagpole Installation Instructions

Installing a flagpole requires careful planning and execution to ensure stability and longevity. This guide covers three types of flagpole installations based on detailed instructions from provided documents: Aluminum Flagpole, Telescoping Flagpole with Ground Sleeve, and Internal Halyard Flagpole. Each section outlines the materials, steps, and important considerations for a successful setup.

Aluminum Flagpole Installation

The aluminum flagpole installation process is designed for durability, using a concrete foundation and precise assembly techniques.

Materials Needed

  • Aluminum flagpole (sectional or single-piece)
  • Foundation tube
  • Concrete mix
  • Wood wedges (supplied by installer)
  • Dry sand
  • Waterproof sealant (e.g., roofing cement or asphalt sealant)
  • Liquid soap (for sectional poles)
  • Tools: Wrench, file, saw horses, caulking gun, sling for hoisting
  • Installation Steps
  1. Dig Foundation Hole: Excavate a hole 4–6 times the flagpole’s butt diameter.

  2. Set Foundation Tube: Position the tube 1–2 inches above finish grade.

  3. Plumb and Brace: Ensure the tube is vertical and secure it to prevent movement during concrete pouring.

  4. Pour Concrete: Fill the hole, trowel the concrete level with the tube’s top, and keep the tube’s interior dry.

  5. Prepare Pole:

    • Lay the pole on sawhorses and unwrap.

    • For sectional poles, file off burrs, lubricate jamb sleeves with liquid soap, align numbered sections, and jamb together.

  6. Attach Truck: Screw the truck into the pole’s top, tightening with a wrench. For cap-style trucks, secure set screws.

  7. Install Ball: Screw the ball into the truck, tightening the stem with a wrench (avoid turning the ball itself).

  8. Install Flash Collar (if included):

    • Slide the collar onto the pole from the bottom, positioning it above the cleat.

    • Temporarily secure with one cleat screw.

    • After pole erection, remove the cleat, slide the collar down, reattach the cleat, and caulk with waterproof sealant.

  9. Thread Rope: Pass the rope through the truck’s sheave and tie the ends to prevent it from slipping out during erection.

  10. Erect Pole: Insert the pole into the foundation tube, center it, and align cleat holes as desired.

  11. Plumb Pole: Use wood wedges to stabilize and plumb the pole.

  12. Secure Pole: Pack dry sand between the pole and tube, leaving a 2-inch void at the top, and seal with waterproof sealant.

  13. Attach Snaps: Loop snaps onto the rope, spacing them appropriately for the flag size.

Important Notes

  • For sectional flagpoles, position the hoisting sling below the joint to prevent separation.

  • For yardarm-type flagpoles, locate three pre-drilled holes one-third from the top, attach a 6” x 9” plate, secure U-bolts around the yardarm through the plate, and fasten with nuts, washers, and four acorn nuts.

Telescoping Flagpole with Ground Sleeve Installation

The telescoping flagpole uses a PVC ground sleeve for a simpler, yet sturdy installation, ideal for residential or light commercial use.

Materials Needed

  • Telescoping flagpole

  • PVC sleeve (included with pole)

  • 3–5 bags of 60lb. concrete mix

  • Small rock or coarse gravel

  • Measuring tape or yardstick

  • Contractor’s level

  • Container for mixing concrete

Installation Steps

  1. Dig Foundation Hole: Excavate a hole to accommodate the PVC sleeve, typically deeper and wider than the sleeve’s dimensions.

  2. Add Gravel Base: Place a layer of small rock or coarse gravel at the hole’s bottom for drainage.

  3. Set PVC Sleeve: Position the sleeve in the hole, ensuring the top is at ground level.

  4. Plumb Sleeve: Use a contractor’s level to verify the sleeve is vertical.

  5. Brace Sleeve: Secure the sleeve to prevent movement during concrete pouring.

  6. Pour Concrete: Mix and pour concrete around the sleeve, filling the hole to ground level, and trowel smooth.

  7. Cure Concrete: Allow the concrete to set (typically 24–48 hours, depending on mix instructions).

  8. Insert Pole: Place the telescoping flagpole into the PVC sleeve, ensuring a snug fit.

  9. Secure Pole: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for locking or securing the pole in the sleeve.

Important Notes

  • Ensure proper drainage with gravel to prevent water accumulation around the sleeve.

  • Verify the sleeve’s alignment with a level to avoid a leaning flagpole.

Internal Halyard Flagpole Installation

The internal halyard flagpole features a concealed rope system with a winch, offering a sleek appearance and added security.

Materials Needed

  • Internal halyard flagpole (sectional or single-piece)

  • Foundation tube

  • Concrete mix

  • Wood wedges (supplied by installer)

  • Dry sand

  • Waterproof sealant (e.g., roofing cement or asphalt sealant)

  • Liquid soap (for sectional poles)

  • Electrical fish tape

  • Winch assembly with keys and screws

  • Crank handle

  • Rubber-coated counterweight

  • Tools: Wrench, file, saw horses, caulking gun, sling for hoisting, Allen wrench

Installation Steps

  1. Dig Foundation Hole: Excavate a hole 4–6 times the flagpole’s butt diameter.

  2. Set Foundation Tube: Position the tube 2 inches above grade.

  3. Plumb and Brace: Ensure the tube is vertical and secure it during concrete pouring.

  4. Pour Concrete: Fill the hole, trowel level with the tube’s top, and keep the tube’s interior dry.

  5. Prepare Pole:

    • Lay the pole on sawhorses and unwrap.

    • For sectional poles, file off burrs, lubricate jamb sleeves with liquid soap, align numbered sections or arrows, and jamb together.

  6. Install Cable Assembly:

    • Locate the truck with pre-assembled upper and lower cable assemblies.

    • Use electrical fish tape to feed the lower cable through the 1-1/2” threaded hole at the pole’s top, pulling it through the entire pole.

    • At the winch hole (4 ft. above grade), carefully pull 4 ft. of cable through the slotted keyway.

    • Screw the truck assembly into the pole’s top securely.

  7. Install Ball (optional): Screw the ball into the truck, tightening the stem with a wrench.

  8. Install Flash Collar (if included):

    • Slide the collar onto the pole from the bottom, positioning it above the winch.

    • Temporarily tie it in place.

    • After erection, untie, slide the collar down, and caulk with waterproof sealant.

  9. Install Winch Assembly:

    • Remove the cylinder lock keys and hex drive screw from the winch.

    • Unlock the winch by turning the key counterclockwise and removing the cylinder.

    • Insert the cable’s loose end into the winch’s cable retaining hole, ensuring no cable protrudes on the other side.

    • Tighten the cable retaining set screw using the crank handle and an Allen wrench.

    • Insert the winch cartridge into the winch hole via the square keyway.

    • Secure the cartridge with the hex screw through the opposite 1/2” hole.

    • Crank clockwise to move the upper cable toward the pole’s top.
